Palau
Snorkelers and scuba divers will find their paradise between one of this western Pacific nation’s hundreds of islands. In October, 100% of Palau’s marine territory – an area roughly twice the size of Mexico – was designated as a sanctuary. That gives travelers the opportunity to enjoy the pristine waters, and the thousands of fish and coral species they hold, for years to come. Hop on over to this relatively undeveloped isle before the crowds do!
America’s National Parks
One of our own national treasures, the National Park Service, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2016. For travelers who have yet to experience the natural wonders of Yellowstone, Yosemite or the Grand Canyon, commemorative activities at the parks throughout the year will leave them with a special appreciation for America’s splendor.
Botswana
A lot has changed since this southern African nation gained its independence 50 years ago. A healthy economy and forward-thinking government have brought stability and airport upgrades that are in the works will make getting here easier for travelers. Diverse landscapes bring diverse wildlife, and there is no better place to experience Botswana’s expansive, untamed spirit than in its national parks, which make up 17% of its territory.
Greenland
The time to visit this wintery wonderland is March 2016, when the Arctic Winter Games make their debut here. Not only will visitors be able to witness skyscraper-sized glaciers and one of the best views of the Northern Lights, they will also learn more about Greenland’s culture through the unique competitions and cultural festivals associated with the Games. Pole-pushing, anyone?
Nepal
Nepal’s infrastructure and economy are still rebuilding after the massive earthquake that struck here last April. Any visitor dollars will help ramp up its tourism industry, which is the country’s leading source of income. Of course, there is plenty of altitude here for adventurous travelers to tackle. The more culturally-inclined will savor UNESCO World Heritage sites, such as Buddha’s birthplace and the sacred shrines of Kathmandu Valley.
Riviera Nayarit
January through March is the best time to chill out in this less-visited region of western Mexico. It’s a popular surf spot, but it also offers plenty in the way of authentic Mexican culture and cuisine. More of the region’s former fishing villages and sleepy beach towns are under development, so 2016 is an ideal time to visit for those looking to experience Nayarit’s natural beauty and laid-back vibes.
2016 promises to bring a variety of new travel trends and destinations to discover – where do you plan to travel next year?
