Planning a Bucket List Vacation to Alaska

Vacation in Alaska - what to pack, where to go, and our insider tips

By: Carolyn Sekerak, Director of Marketing Strategy and Community Engagement

Alaska is at the top of many clients’ travel bucket lists—and for good reason. An Alaska vacation truly has something for everyone! This is why it’s so important as a travel advisor to set expectations with your clients and ask the right questions from the start, so you can help plan the perfect Alaska vacation.

From cruises, to cruise tours, to land-only trips, there are many ways to get out and see Alaska. Alaska is known for its National Parks & Forests, from Glacier Bay to Tongass National Rainforest to Denali. Each park offers different experiences such as outdoor adventures, wildlife viewing, and glacier trekking.

Weather is unpredictable in Alaska, so it’s important to consider your clients’ must-have experiences when choosing how they should visit. Set the expectation to have back-up plans for days when rain or wind interfere. First-time Alaska visitors may hope to see the spectacular Northern Lights, but location and time of year are important factors to consider when planning for possible viewings.

The simplest Alaska vacation is a 7-day round-trip cruise from Seattle or Vancouver. However, for an all-encompassing Alaska experience, most cruise lines also offer a “cruise tour,” which is the addition of a land tour before or after your cruise. Cruise tours offer the opportunity to see more of Alaska’s interior. They also include seamless transport by rail or motorcoach with unforgettable views along the way. You’ll see cities like Denali, Talkeetna, and Fairbanks.
